License Helicopter License - Info on Requirements Cost and How to Start

The path of getting a Helicopter License is about the same as any other pilot license. Private Pilot is first, followed by Commercial License with an Instrument Rating in between.

One of the major differences is the cost. Helicopters have more moving parts and cost more to maintain, so therefore it can cost about double to get your license.

In most cases people that are seeking their helicopter license fall into two categories. The first, are people that do not poses any other type of pilot license at all. The second are already pilots of some sort, usually airplane pilots seeking to add a helicopter license on their current fixed wing license.

People who don't have a license:

The path is just the same as for someone getting a fixed wing license. They need to get 40 hours total of flying which consists of a minimum 20 instruction hours and 20 hours solo. Now in reality it takes someone about 70 hours to become proficient enough to pass the FAA Exam.

You will need to pass a written examination which is multiple choice and with a passing grade of 70% which should be easy enough.

People who already have a license:

There are some shortcuts because you are already a rated pilot but not much. You will still have to do about 50 hours to become good enough at flying a helicopter to pass the FAA checkride.
